This is a photo of XO, Major Frank R. Smoke, home town Las Vegas, Nevada. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1945 and underwent recruit training at San Diego. Upon completion of boot camp he served a few months at El Toro prior to being transferred to Quantico where he served as a Link Trainer instructor. His Quantico tour lasted for three years and he advanced to the rank of SSGT. In 1949 he entered flight training at Pensacola until November 1950 when he was designated a Naval Aviator and commissioned as a 2nd Lt. After a short 5 months at El Toro, he deployed to Korea as a member of a replacement draft and joined VMF-323 where he flew over 80 land and carrier based missions. He joined VMF-235 at Beaufort in 1961 as Operations Officer and later became XO of the Death Angels. As of the date this picture was taken (1962) with VMF-235 he was the holder of the Air Medal with one star, PUC w/one star, Korean Service Medal w/stars, Korean PUC and the Good Conduct Medal. |
