COMMANDANT'S
MEDIA LETTER ON JSF
The CNO and I are firmly committed to the
Joint Strike Fighter. We agree that JSF will
be a vital element for our expeditionary Navy
and Marine team, a stealthy aircraft able to
operate from carriers, large
deckamphibiousships, expeditionary sites
ashore or main operating bases. I am also
firmly committed to the vision of a JSF STOVL
aircraft for the future all V/STOL force in
Marine aviation. The JSF program is
delivering precisely the kind of weapons
system that the Congress has repeatedly
called for: a truly joint aircraft that
avoids unnecessary duplication in
developments yet also provides leap ahead
technology in a low cost, highly reliable and
interoperable system. We need new aircraft
beginning in FY08 and I expect that aircraft
to be JSFSTOVL. However, should a currently
unforeseeable technical/affordability
challenge preclude introducing an
"acceptable" JSF STOVL aircraft in FY08, then
it is logical for us to accept JSF Navy CV
variants until the program delivers the
STOVL variant that Marines require. JSF is
an important national program, not only for
the Navy, Marines, and Air Force to fly in
the increasingly threatening skies of the
21st century, but also for our allies who
have shown strong interest with their capital
investment in the program. JSF has the
potential to deliver up to 6000
aircraft...think industrial base...for
America and our friends. There is no foreign
aircraft development that can compete with
JSF. So, I support JSF for reasons that are
greater than the valid requirement to equip
Marines with a great weapon system...I
support it because it is the right thing to
do for America.
From the
President
At one time in an effort to save bucks, we
did not mail the winter issue of the RNR to
those who had not paid. Unless we can entice
more of you to ante up we likely will have to
reinstate that practice. Our thanks again to
Don Davis, Dick Cropley, Bob Carter and Tom
Elser.

I'll endeavor to mail to the correct

WEB NEWS
The 2001 rosters have been posted on the
Squadron web site. There is a new format and
there are new names. Sadly, the Deceased
Roster increased by 11 former Death Angels.
There were significant additions to our Main
Roster and I am pleased to report an increase
in enlisted members. The web works. Our site
appears to be a great recruiting tool. Many
of the newly signed up members have already
paid their 2001 dues.
The Main Roster has swollen to almost 400.
Because of the long period of time it took to
load this data base, It has been broken down
into segments of the Alphabet. Each of the
new pages should load much more quickly and
the layout is easily navigated.
Several members have notified us of errors
and the corrections are being made on an
ongoing sometimes erratic basis. Please check
your listing and pass on any errors or
omissions to Tom O'Rorke: www.
Thor@gulftel.com.
Note the two columns. One shows those who
were former commanding officers of 235. The
other is an instant check on the status of
your dues for this year. If you have already
sent Jim your 10 dollars that information is
noted and we thank you. If you have not paid,
that information is also noted. Send Jim a
check and, as if by magic, the "not paid"
will change to "paid".
Take the time to scan through the roster
pages and take note of those who have paid
their 2001 dues. You will quickly see that
the Squadron website and the Red Nose Review
are currently being supported by about 10 to
12 percent of our known former 235 squadron
members. At only 10 dollars per year per
person you can readily see that we operate on
a very thin margin.
On a lighter note: Thanks to photographs
provided by former squadron member Don Davis
and the work of Tom Elser, we are pleased to
report on a new page. The page lists a series
of photographs from VMF(AW)-235's WestPac
Tour in '63. It may be accessed from the last
snapshot in the '60s section of the Snapshots
Pages and from the Home page menu bar.
Thanks also to the contribution of photos
from Dick Cropley, most of which were taken
by Bob Carter, Tom Elser has put together
another episode in the history of
Squadron-235. Enjoy. This new page features
VMSB-235 in the southpacific and is accessed
from the last snapshot in the '40s section of
the Snapshots Pages and from the Home page
menu bar.
These pages are a unique means of
providing multiple photos of a singular
cruise, tour or deployment accessible from
one web page that is easily expandable. If
you would like to see similar pages from
cruises, deployments or tours in 235
gathering up photos and send them in.

Did you know that there are 117,600
Marines that are retired from active duty in
normal or disability status. If they keep
cutting T/O, we will soon have more retired
than on active duty.
Col. Mel Sautter has been reselected to
head up the Darden-Schilt Squadron through
2002. With Sautter (a Squadron 235 type)
remaining in place, the Tidewater Virginia
Chapter of the MCAA will maintain continuity
as it builds up to the national Convention at
Norfolk's Waterside Sheraton in September
2002.
His name is Uncle Russ in our roster and
he served in the Corsair era of VMF-235 and
has had a pretty heartfelt career in business
and civil aviation. He and his lovely wife
Irene came by the ed's house for a visit and
we had a very nice visit and lunch at the
Seaside Grill in Apollo Beach (FL). Uncle
Russ has contributed a lot of time ferrying
patients for the Shriner's Burn Center. What
else would you expect from a Marine, Semper
