MCAA 2001 CANCELED

The MCAA 2001 Symposium & Reunion to be held at the Town & Country Hotel, 20-23 September 2001, HAS BEEN CANCELLED out of respect and in consideration for those who lost their lives, and their families, due to the events of September 11th in Washington, DC and New York. We will issue refunds in as timely a manner as possible. Since this is late in the game, please spread the word to all of your friends, squadron-mates, associates, etc. Thanks for your help and understanding in the matter. Semper Fi.

J. P. Monroe reports that the 2001 symposium will not be reschedule. All who registered with MCAA will be mailed a copy of the 2001 program and those requesting a refund will be mailed one. Otherwise the funds will used to help pay the cost of the canceled symposium. Hotel charges alone will be significant. J.P. will provide more detail in the mail-out.

SQUADRON EVENTS CANCELED

Treasurer Strawn has proposed that Ready Room 2001 payments be credited to Ready Room 2002. We ask those wishing a refund contact Jim. Otherwise we will hold these dollars for 2002. As for those who mailed checks for the Thursday dinner, we believe those dollars could be sent in the Squadron's name to some worthy and appropriate fund in memory of those killed in the Pentagon and/or New York attack. Again: those wishing a refund simply contact Jim and if we do not hear from you, we will follow through with the ready room funds carry-over and the dinner funds donation.

THANKS

Our thanks to CAPT. MAC McCLELLAND, a Red Nose from the Atsugi '55-'56 and Beaufort '60 '61 era. As you no doubt know, Mac had invited fellow Death Angels attending MCAA, to his home near San Diego for a party on Friday, 21 September. Mac, thank you again for the kind invitation. Maybe some of us visiting your area in the months to come will be able to thank you in person and beat you out of a drink or two.

DARLYN HANLEY

We are saddened to report the death of Darlyn Hanley on 17 August 2001. Darlyn was the loving wife of our friend and squadron mate, Michael Hanley. Mike served in VMF-235 and VMF(AW)-235 in Beaufort in '61 - '62 and Astsugi in '63. Mike, you have our sincere and deepest sympathy.

CAPT. MAC McCLELLAND, a Red Nose from the Atsugi '55-'56 and Beaufort '60 '61 eras, cordially invites fellow Death Angels to his home on Friday afternoon, 21 September, for adult refreshments and retelling of old tales. Mac, aka Mach One, would especially enjoy seeing some of his cohorts from his Atsugi and Beaufort tours. Watch this space for details and for directions from the Town & Country.

VMF- 235 TIE UPDATE

Buck Peck reports that Lands End now has the 235 red tie with white/silver stars priced at only 24 bucks. These would look spiffy in San Diego. Take a look by clicking HERE.

RED NOSE REVIEW - SUMMER 2001

Editor-in-Chief Dave Swaney reports that almost 400 copies of Volume 13, Issue 2, were mailed. Your copy should have arrived. Dave included a registration form for MCAA 2001 to make it easy for you. You need only do the following:

1. Go to our Links page, find Town & Country Resort, then reserve your San Diego room for MCAA 2001.

2. Complete Dave's MCAA form, include your check and mail to J. P. Monroe at MCAA.

3. Mail your Ready Room dues & your Squadron dinner checks to Jim Strawn (scroll down).

4. Get a couple of plane tickets or gas up the car/van/SUV.

Now you can kick back and leisurely enjoy your RNR. Check out New Addresses, Taps, our Treasurer's Report, Read & Initial and all of Dave's good work. But do steps 1-4 first. You won't regret it.

You never know who will show up at the Ready Room. Don't miss out. Make plans to be there 20-23 September 2001 - San Diego.

NEW PAGES

Thanks to photographs provided by former squadron member Don Davis and the work of Tom Elser, we are pleased to report on a new page. The page lists a series of photographs from VMF(AW)-235's WestPac Tour in '63. It may be accessed from the last snapshot in the '60s section of the Snapshots Pages, from the Home page menu bar and temporarily from the page update list below.

IMPORTANCE OF ANNUAL DUES

Dues make it happen. Without dues we have no VMF235.COM and no Red Nose Review. Ten bucks isn't much. Ante up. Find your name on the new roster to see if your dues are paid for 2001. If you find yourself not current send Jim a check. Make it out to Squadron-235 and mail it to James E. Strawn, 4633 Bruce Road, Chester, VA 23831.

Feel free to make it out for $20.00 and that will take care of 2002. You save a stamp, and there's no telling what that will be worth when the new 2002 postage rates come out.

 TOM ELSER

It saddens me to report that Thomas L. Elser, our talented photo editor and friend, died of a heart attack on Monday 18 June. Tom was on vacation with his daughter and grand children in Carlsbad, New Mexico. Tom's son-in-law reports that he died quietly and quickly. Arrangements have not yet been announced.

Tom put in many long hours on behalf of our Squadron, and did a wonderful job building and editing the many Snapshot and A/C pages we enjoy on our web site. He will be missed.

We already have a new addition to our new series, VMSB-235 In South Pacific. This new page is accessed from the last snapshot in the '40s section of the Snapshots Pages, from the Home page menu bar and temporarily from the page update list below.

These pages are a unique means of providing multiple photos of a singular cruise, tour or deployment accessible from one web page that is easily expandable. If you would like to see similar pages from cruises, deployments or tours from your stint in 235 you can start by gathering up photos and contacting Tom Elser or Tom O'Rorke. Received 07 Mar 01 from Jim Wodecki.

We at www.khesanh.com <http://www.khesanh.com> often wonder about the men in the skis above khesanh. They flew so low at times we could see the names on their helmets. I we would like to invite all of you who flew missions over KheSanh to stop by and leave us a message and sign our guest book, we would really appreciate hearing from you Marines who saved our asses more than we could count.
