This picture was contributed by Bob Bowes who was a Sgt at the time. Bob is in the second column from the viewer's right. He's 7 back from the front and 7 forward from the rear wearing khakis - standing forward of two squadron mates in greens. Bob passed some comments along with his letter that are worth copying here. "This is a picture of the entire squadron that was taken at MCAS El Toro. I think it was either the late fall of 1950 or early spring 1951. The tall guy in the front is Col. Mendenhall (CO) and to his left is Major McGee (Exec). The pilot who is the third from the front on the outside line on the left is Capt. Bill Degan, whose son, the U.S. Marshall, was killed in the line of duty (he was also a Marine). As you can see, aircraft #11, which is pictured on another of the site's web pages as "Corsair off the Coast," is parked in the upper left corner. We had some of the best pilots in the Corps (some were a little nuts, but they were GOOD!). We were activated at NAS Squantum, MA on 18 September 1950. The place is now known as Marina Bay with suxary condos and fancy restaurants." |
